BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UAB Medicine, the American Red Cross and LifeSouth Community Blood Centers held joint press conference to address the blood shortage across the United States.

Health officials say these are 20-year lows for blood supply and they are asking Alabamians to “roll up their sleeves” and donate.

“Blood donation has been severely affected by COVID-19, and the current situation is critical,” Director of Transfusion Services at UAB Dr. Marisa Marques said. “We are asking the public to donate blood via one of the blood collection agencies, the American Red Cross or LifeSouth Community Blood Centers, at any of their locations or drives.”

To be eligible to donate, you must be 17 years or older and weigh over 110 pounds. At this time all blood types are needed.

If you’re interested in donating, click here to set up an appointment with the American Red Cross or here to find a LifeSouth location near you.
