BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Mayor Randall Woodfin held a press conference on Monday to discuss the beginning of construction on new workforce housing.
The Birmingham mayor was joined by Councilor Darryl O’Quinn and the developer of the former American Red Cross building at noon on Monday to discuss construction of the new building and highlight a program that includes collaboration with Tuskegee University students on the project.
The former Red Cross building will be turned into 192 units that will offer housing to residents making between 60 to 120 percent of the area median income, which typically includes professions such as teaching, first responding and healthcare. The project was made possible by city incentives and state and federal historic tax credits.
Mayor Woodfin called for a continuing conversation about workforce housing, and Councilor O’Quinn agreed: “We are meeting a dire need in the city center and in Birmingham as a whole. I agree with Mayor Woodfin that we need a conversation about affordable workforce housing to continue.”
The new facility will be located at 2225 3rd Avenue North in Birmingham.
