VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (WIAT) — July 16 marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 launch that sent the first men to the moon. To honor such a historical event in the United States’ history, Vestavia Hills will be hosting a model rocket launch.

The launch of the Saturn V in 1969 sent Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins into space and onto the moon. That spacecraft was built right here in Alabama.

The commemorative model rocket launch will take place at the Sicard Hollow Athletic Complex at 6 p.m. July 16.

Attendees will also benefit from a space-themed moon bounce, crafts, splash pad, playground and food from food trucks and Chick-Fil-A as well as Bruster’s ice cream.
