BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE: According to the Jefferson County Coroner, the deceased victim of yesterday’s deck collapse has been identified as three-year-old Titus Hubbard of Birmingham, Alabama. Hubbard did not live at the residence where the deck collapsed.
The incident happened at 10:20 p.m. on Tuesday night at a private home in the 100 block of Freda Jane Lane in Birmingham. Hubbard was taken to St. Vincent’s East Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:05 p.m.
Tojayla Coachman is the child’s mother and met with us at the house of Freda Jane Lane which belongs to her sister. She had to see it for herself.
“I’m just so devastated,” said Coachman. “I’m so heartbroken. This is just a terrible pill to swallow.”
It was supposed to be a joyous day: a birthday party for her sister. Coachman wasn’t there at the time, but when she got a phone call and was told to hurry over to the hospital, it became a nightmare.
“When I got to St. Vincent’s East, the Police said ‘I’m sorry for your loss,'” explained Coachman. “I said ‘what loss?’ I was crying and terrified.”
Coachman tells CBS 42 that she thought she would be able to see her son, hold him, and help nurse him back to health. But before she even arrived, he had passed.
“Titus was a sweet person. He would share anything with anybody,” said Coachman. “And he loved his momma and his sister. He just was a free spirit. He loved to help people.”
Titus was Coachman’s oldest of two, and a big brother to a 10-month-old girl named Maya.
“That was my oldest. A few years later I had Maya and now, I only have Maya,” said Coachman in tears.
Coachman tells CBS 42 that Titus loved going to Chuck E. Cheese’s and playing with his sister. What is most devastating to her is that she can no longer share any of those experiences with her son again.
At this time, officials confirm that no final determination has been made regarding what caused the deck to collapse.
