Students enrolled in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will now be required to have major medical health insurance, according to the university’s website

Students can provide proof of their own coverage, or they will be enrolled in the school’s Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) provided by United HealthCare. According to UAB’s site, the premium for the fall semester is $749 with the maximum out of pocket cost listed at $4,000 per year.

The cost of the insurance plans will be applied to student accounts. Students who are enrolled in less than 9 credit hours a semester or graduate students enrolled in certain programs are not required to have insurance.
