UA alum creates GoFundMe for Philando Castile’s family

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — University of Alabama graduate Xavier Burgin created a GoFundMe in the aftermath of an officer-involved shooting that killed 32-year-old Philando Castile.

Family told the AP Castile was a well-liked cafeteria supervisor at a Montessori school. His girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, reportedly posted a video after Castile was shot while in the vehicle with her and her 4-year-old daughter in the Falcon Heights suburb.

Authorities are looking into whether the aftermath was livestreamed in a widely shared Facebook video, which shows a woman in a vehicle with a man whose shirt appears to be soaked in blood telling the camera “police just shot my boyfriend for no apparent reason.”

St. Anthony Police interim police chief Jon Mangseth said the incident began when an officer pulled over a vehicle around 9 p.m. Wednesday in Falcon Heights, a St. Paul suburb Mangseth’s department serves. Mangseth said he did not have details about the reason for the traffic stop, but that at some point shots were fired. The man was struck but no one else was injured, he said.

The GoFundMe set up for the family of Castile reads,

“We lost another precious life. This time in Falcon Heights. They stopped #PhilandoCastile over a broken tail light, then shot him as he went for his license. He is now dead.Left behind are his family, his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and his daughter. They shot him several times in front of his girlfriend and daughter. His girlfriend then recorded what happened via FB live.He was shot after he complied with law by informing the police that he had a firearm and license to carry. You can read more info here: https://twitter.com/i/moments/750914733155373056All funds will go to Philando’s family. If you want to help, this is how. #BlackLivesMatter#PhilandoCastile#FalconHeightsShootingEdit: For anyone checking in, my name is Xavier Burgin (@XLNB via twitter).
