COTTONDALE, Ala. (WIAT)-Police in Tuscaloosa county have identified the man who was shot and killed in front of his house in Cottondale Thursday night.
27-year-old Cory Mitchell was found dead around 10:30 p.m. on Clearview street off Skyland Boulevard.
Some residents living in the neighborhood are edge worried after the violent murder happened. Lisa Barker has lived in the Cottondale neighborhood for 26 years and has children she is concerned about.
“It was really scary, it didn’t even feel real I was shocked. I’ve just never experienced anything like that,” Barker said.
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit is investigating and collecting evidence and talking to witnesses. No arrests have been made and police don’t have a motive. Captain Kip Hart says a vehicle pulled up Thursday night and opened fire on Mitchell.
“The only thing we know is that the victim approached a car, the victim was at his house and approached a car in front of his house and he was shot by one of the occupants,” Hart said.
Lisa Barker said she heard the gunshots, she hopes whoever killed her neighbor will be caught and brought to justice.
“I heard a few gunshots but we weren’t sure what it was we thought it might be fireworks. Then my neighbor called and asked if I had heard something. So we waited a few minutes to come out and we were scared and we’ve never had anything like this happen in the neighborhood”.
This marks the seventh homicide of the year, five in Tuscaloosa County and two in the city of Tuscaloosa.
