TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — A Tuscaloosa artist is creating a sculpture for one of the communities most famous sons.

Artist Caleb O’Connor is just in the beginning phase, but he is in the process of creating a lifelike bronze sculpture of boxing Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder.

The champ is from Tuscaloosa and O’Connor thought it was fitting that the famous boxer should get the recognition he deserves.

O’Connor says it is going to be a long process, but worth it.

“At first I’ve been spending time watching the champion training.  And getting to know the body mechanics of boxing that took weeks and I’m still working on that. Then we had him come in and we photograph him in poses. Then the sculpture will take three to four months” O’Connor said.

The Tuscaloosa Art Council and the local YMCA are involved in the project. Both are contributing funds. The Sculpture cost $65,000 to make.

When it is finished it will stand in front of the new YMCA in Tuscaloosa. Wilder sometimes trains at the location before he fights.
