12-year-old Tuscaloosa boy killed in Pickens County car crash

PICKENS COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) - Alabama State Troopers are investigating a deadly car accident that claimed the life of a 12-year-old boy in Pickens County.

The fatal crash happened Tuesday afternoon on Highway 86, six miles from Carrollton.  12-year-old Demetruius Thomas was killed.  His older sister Brittnay Britten is heartbroken.

"It's hard, I never thought that I would be losing my little brother. He was loving, he was kind, he had the biggest heart for that you could ever imagine from a younger child," Britten said.

The 12 year old was a passenger in the vehicle when the crash happened.  Police say the driver lost control and the car left the road and struck a tree. Four others in the vehicle were transported to DCH Hospital to get treated for injuries.

Reginald Thomas is the victim's father.  He says his son's death has shaken the entire family.

"Man its rough man, we are trying to hold it together but its rough man.  I've never had a child killed before but somebody has to stay strong so I think I have to be that man for the family.  But like I said it's really rough," Thomas said.

The family was driving to the Pickens County Jail to post bond for Brittnay Britten, the sister of the 12 year old victim.  She was serving time in jail.  Britten says she is glad to be out of jail but is devastated at losing her brother.

"I had court Monday and Tuesday and yesterday he knew that I was coming home and he was like I don't want to stay at home I want to go see my sister I miss my sister," Britten said.

The fatal crash is under investigation.  Troopers say seatbelts were not used when the accident happened.
