PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — While recreational marijuana is now legal in Oregon, it’s still illegal for individuals to sell it.

But Craigslist users are trying to get around the law by selling baggies and giving away the pot that comes in them.

Posts on the website advertise plastic bags for $25, $50 or $100 and the sellers promise to throw in the marijuana for free.

“The concern of having marijuana for sale on, say, Craigslist is that it can be accessible to just about anyone,” Jonathan Modie with the Oregon Health Authoritysaid. “Kids could buy it.”

For the record, Modie says private marijuana sales on websites like Craigslist are illegal altogether. But who goes after those selling it online?

According to the OHA and the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, it’s essentially a police issue.

If it’s a transaction of less than an ounce of pot between adults, and if they were caught by police, they could be issued a misdemeanor citation. Penalties for private sales — if they are caught — escalate if they involve children or take place near a school.

Several of the ads on Craigslist were taken down just days after being posted. Craigslist has not responded to KOIN 6 News’ inquiries.
