BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A beautification project in Southside aims at turning the mundane into the beautiful. A colorful and eye-catching mural in the alley wall on 11th Ave. S in the Five Points South community will be unveiled Saturday, July 13.
Artist Shane B has created a number of murals in Birmingham. Each piece of art serves a different purpose and is created with its totality in mind.
“Obviously I want people to take away from little pieces of it, but at the same time, I want them to realize that it’s a whole. It’s a whole body of work.”
The mural is located in the Alley behind several businesses including Insomnia Cookies, Jimmy John’s and Alchemy 213. Alchemy 213 owner Ace Graham is part of the brains behind the operation.
“We’re going to different business owners and asking them, ‘hey, what are we doing about this space?” said Graham. “There’s a door that’s over here by Waffle House that always gets tagged for gang members, and we have the rights to go in and do this wall an have it commissioned and do a project there.”
A goal for the project is to improve the community through the use of public art. It’s meant to serve as a conversation starter and means of coming together.
“We walk past each other on the streets every single day, and we never get a chance to talk to each other,” said Graham. “So maybe we take this time — freeze in time — and we talk to each other, and we have some type of rapport, and hopefully from there, we have a little bit more understanding of who we are as individuals.”
The unveiling is July 13 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
