South Carolina senior living facility, animal shelter evacuates to Birmingham

Local News

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — As Hurricane Dorian nears South Carolina, evacuations are underway. One senior living facility from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina arrived here in Birmingham Wednesday afternoon.

About 90 residents from Mount Pleasant’s Somerby senior living facility have arrived here in Birmingham. They are staying at the Doubletree by Hilton hotel. They were accompanied by 40 staff members as they made the drive inland.

The living facility in Mount Pleasant coordinated with their sister facility here, to make this evacuation possible. They do not have a set date as to how long residents will stay here but are hoping the weather clears by Sunday.

They’re calling it an “Evacuation vacation.” That’s because organizers are working to make this as fun as possible for the senior citizens involved.

“We partner with our sister community here in Birmingham. They have a lifestyle program that comes and does several activities throughout the day. We have local churches, local representatives that come to spend time with them while they’re here in the hotel. So it is fun as it can be in the next couple of days,” said Ryan Robertson, one of the evacuation coordinators.

We are told Somerby of Mount Pleasant is covering all evacuation costs. None of the financial burdens will fall on the residents.

It isn’t just the humans that are being evacuated. The Greater Birmingham Humane Society has taken in 25 cats and 6 dogs from Hilton Head, South Carolina. “These guys were already available for adoption, they didn’t have a home. And now they’re going to find their forever home here in Birmingham,” says Lindsey May, the shelter director.

Donations of wet cat/dog food, dry cat/dog food, non-clumping cat litter, kennels, new pet beds, new collars/leashes, tarps, towels/hand towels, and cat/dog toys will be collected beginning on Wednesday, September 4th at the GBHS Adoption Center along with the below listed partner locations.
