HANCEVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) — A fire broke out at a poultry fat rendering plant in Hanceville on Friday.

Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail told CBS 42 that Hanceville Fire Department received a call about the fire at 12:35 p.m. Friday. HFD and five other departments worked the site, Neil said.

A plant manager told Nail that no injuries are reported. Another employee told Nail that there is significant damage to the plant.

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management released a statement on the fire Friday.

“ADEM’s Emergency Response is on the scene at River Valley Ingredients in Hanceville to respond to the large fire at the plant,” the statement said. “On scene officials have begun initial efforts to address environmental impacts. ADEM will assess the situation and respond appropriately.”

ADEM is charged with environmental regulation in Alabama.

“In addition,” the statement continued, “ADEM has determined that water used to extinguish the fire has been contained on site. At this time, there have been no discharges to waterways.”

River Valley Ingredients is owned by Tyson Foods, Inc. and processes poultry products. In 2019, they came under fire after a large wastewater spill killed massive amounts of fish in Mulberry Fork.
