BROOKWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) — Police in Brookwood are looking for thieves who stole six American flags over the weekend from the veterans memorial park.  The crime has outraged many residents along with town officials.

Monday morning town workers put up six new American flags to replace the ones that were stolen. Park Director Bill Squires is hoping whoever took the flags will turn themselves in and bring back stolen flags.

“It was immediate outrage from the community as soon as the word started spreading.  People were outraged that somebody would show the lack of respect for our town and for our flags,” Squires said.

All six flags were stolen off the flag poles Saturday, the crime was committed just days away from the July 4th holiday.   Austin Rico often jogs in the park and is disappointed that anyone could steal flags.

“It absolutely horrible and I wouldn’t expect this from a nice little town like Brookwood. And it hurts me a little bit because it’s the American flag and it’s everything Americans represent,” Rico said.

The town of Brookwood is offering an $800 reward for information that can help catch whoever is responsible for the theft.

“And this being our Brookwood memorial veterans memorial you feel like its a slap in the face of the men whose names are on that memorial too, it’s just a shame this happened.”

Squires tells CBS 42 the crime happened right near the police station, town video surveillance camera’s picked up images of two people officials believe stole the flags. Police believe the suspects are juveniles and they want to track them down.
