Sheriff: Second correctional officer accused of having sex with an inmate

CALHOUN COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) -- Days after a correctional officer was arrested for custodial sexual misconduct, Sheriff Matthew Wade announced that a second correctional officer is accused of having a sexual relationship with an inmate in a press conference on Monday.

Justin Stamps was arrested on Friday. Sheriff Wade said Stamps knew the inmate he allegedly had a sexual relationship with outside of the Anniston City Jail.

The alleged relationship started in May.

Sheriff Wade said he is heartbroken, but he wants to be transparent with the public.

"These type of people cannot be allowed to stand in the ranks of the men and women in law enforcement," Wade said. "These people embarrass us, they shame us, whenever something happens, we hear it."

The Calhoun County Sheriff said with these two arrests, he is now down five correctional officers. One officer was terminated for a rules violation and two others quit.

He says they are trying to hire more correctional officers, but there aren't enough applicants. The sheriff cited pay as a reason for low interests in the position.
