Second Chance Job Fair offers help to people with a criminal record looking for a job

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — This month, the Alabama Department of Labor, Alabama Career Center System and others will host a Second Chance Job Fair. It serves people looking for work who may have a criminal record.

Before the fair, employers and job seekers can attend a workshop to prepare for the fair. The Job Readiness Workshop will be Tuesday, May 22nd at the Birmingham Career Center on 4th Avenue South. You’ll learn how to dress for success, interview skills and develop a resume. Attendees will leave with a certificate of completion and a free professional resume to present to employers. An Employer Workshop is planned for Wednesday, May 23rd from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will also be at the Birmingham Career Center. Topics include benefits of hiring ex-offenders, tax credits and other financial incentives, and success stories. The Alabama Career Center System, Alabama Department of Corrections, Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles, and The Wright Way Company will take part in the workshop. The Second Chance Job Fair will be Wednesday, May 30th. It’s from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bill Harris Arena Crossplex in Birmingham. Right now, there are 50 confirmed employers and more are expected to be at the event. It’s important to bring a resume to the event but the Birmingham Career Center can help create one with you.
