BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Faces were glued to their phones Monday afternoon after Popeye’s took a slight jab at Chick-Fil-A on Twitter.
The fast-food chain known for it’s fried chicken and biscuits recently released a Popeyes chicken sandwich that comes in classic or spicy. Since it’s release, many foodies have expressed their love for the new sandwich on Twitter, even saying it may be better than Chick-Fil-A’s ever-popular classic chicken sandwich.
So how did this war start?
Let’s take it from the top.
On August 12, Popeyes tweeted the details of their sandwich.
One week later, Chick-Fil-A made a subtle response with their layers, calling their chicken sandwich the original.
Not long after that post, Twitter went in an uproar thinking maybe Chick-Fil-A was feeling the heat from their new competition on the block.
And to add more fuel to the fire, Popeyes noticed. Popeyes quoted the tweet asking, “y’all good?” In a way to ask if they were doing ok since the rise in popularity of their new chicken sandwich.
Gaining thousands of likes and retweets, other fast-food restaurants noticed and hopped in the twitter war proclaiming their menu items as the best chicken sandwich.
Wendy’s made its debut.
In which, Popeyes backfired.
And then ShakeShack, Zaxby’s and more also entered. Whataburger was asked to let them know who’s boss, but they respectfully declined because they know they have already won.
So where do most stand on whether or not Popeyes new chicken sandwich is better than Chick-Fil-A’s? Well, CBS 42 Digital Reporter Jordan Highsmith ran a Twitter Poll and Chick-Fil-A was in the lead.
However, Popeyes around the Birmingham area had lines wrapped around the building all day Tuesday following the Twitter war, most customers there to ask for the new chicken sandwich. Unfortunately, at most locations in the metro-Birmingham area the chicken sandwich was sold out.
“I was looking forward to trying it,” one customer in the drive-thru said. “My favorite is, of course, Chick-Fil-A’s sandwich – its good. Its good, its good. But I was looking forward to trying this too.”
And so the debate remains. Popeyes or Chick-Fil-A?
