Police identify victim, suspect in Birmingham murder-suicide

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Birmingham Police detectives are investigating a murder-suicide that left a couple dead Saturday night.

Around 11 p.m., Birmingham police officers from the South Precinct responded to the 800 block of 30th Street South to investigate a report of a person shot.

Jameria Howard, 28 of Birmingham, has been identified as the victim in this shooting investigation.

Officers arrived and found Howard lying in the parking lot unresponsive and suffering from a gunshot wound, police report. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived and transported her to UAB Hospital for treatment where she later died due to her injury.

During the investigation, officers learned that the suspect in the case, Danny Hagler, 34 of Birmingham, stole a vehicle from the parking lot and fled the scene after the shooting.

While the South Precinct officers were responding to this shooting, West Precinct officers received a call of a person shot in the 600 block of 5th Place, Pratt.

Birmingham police officers arrived at the scene and found a person suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to UAB Hospital for treatment where he died shortly upon arrival, police say.

Hagler, who is the suspect in the shooting, was identified as the victim in the second shooting.

While investigating both shootings, investigators learned that both incidents were related to one another. Police learned that Howard and Hagler were involved in a relationship and lived together at the home in the 800 block of 30th place South.

The night of the shootings police learned that Howard and Hagler began arguing before the first shooting that injured and ultimately killed Howard.

Investigators found that the suspect, Hagler, shot Howard then left the scene in a stolen vehicle and later shot himself at the second scene. Police report the injury appeared to be self-inflicted.
