PINSON, Ala. (WIAT) — A Pinson Valley High School senior died following a medical emergency at school Thursday.

Pinson Mayor Joe Cochran said Caleb White is the name of the student who died. He was a member of the school’s basketball team and was a finalist for the ASWA Class 6A Player of the Year.

John Huddleston with Jefferson County Schools shared the following email from PVHS Principal Michael Turner, which was sent out to parents Thursday.

Pinson Valley High School Parents,

I unfortunately have some very sad news to report tonight. One of our senior students suffered a medical emergency at school today. Life saving efforts were immediately started and first responders were called. Sadly, the student was later pronounced deceased after being transported to the hospital. Out of respect for the family, we are not releasing the name of the student at this time.

We will have more to say in the near future. Please know counseling resources will be available for anyone who needs them in the coming days. Please keep the student’s family and our school in your prayers.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association released the following statement on its website.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Caleb’s family, his classmates and basketball team and extended school family,” AHSAA Executive Director Alvin Briggs said. “He was an outstanding student-athlete who played in the North-South All-Star Basketball Game last month. He was an outstanding student-athlete and role model.”

No other information has been released at this time.
