Part of historic Ragland church burns down

RAGLAND, Ala (WIAT) - Member's at Hardin's Chapel Church are working to replace a historic sanctuary that burned down late Sunday night. Associate Pastor Douglas Ford has been a member of the church since the 1950's. Ford says the sanctuary was built in 1939, but the church was founded in 1894. Ford says the original sanctuary holds many memories.

“A lot of the people that became Christians, and had the experience of becoming a Christian here in this building.” said Ford.

The sanctuary was currently being used for the youth group. Pastor Mike Allums says many youth group members are saddened.

The Ragland Fire Department and surrounding agencies responded to the fire. Investigators believe a space heater might have caused the fire. The building is a complete loss. No one was injured.

Allums says the building was insured. The youth group will worship in one of the church's other buildings until the sanctuary is rebuilt.
