Oxford, Ala (WIAT) – Oxford residents will soon vote on whether to allow Sunday alcohol sales in the city.
The Oxford City Council voted to let the citizens make the decision. Oxford Mayor, Alton Craft, says several businesses told him they will not come to Oxford without Sunday alcohol sales. Craft says it is important the community make that decision.
“Alcohol has been a decisive issue since prohibition. It split a nation, it could split a city,” said Craft. “By letting the people vote, I think it does, as I said, puts an end one way or another. For at least a decade, if it dies it won’t be back. If it passes, then we put some guidelines on it to govern it, and I think that would be the best way to do this.”
The topic of Sunday alcohol sales has been discussed in the past, but the city council was against it at the time.
The vote will take place on Tuesday, July 23. The polls will open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
