BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — (UPDATE 8:40 a.m.): According to the Jefferson County Coroner, the victim in this morning’s single vehicle crash is being identified. The deceased was driving a 2000 Ford F-250. The individual was traveling south on I-65 when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle left the roadway and hit a large light pole. The pole fell on the vehicle and across the interstate.
The vehicle caught fire. When Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene, firefighters put out the blaze and found the person in the driver’s seat. The driver was pronounced dead at 11:35 p.m. at the scene.
The coroner is working to make a positive ID on the victim.

Investigators are trying to figure out what caused a deadly accident in Birmingham. It happened after eleven on Interstate 65 near Daniel Payne Drive exit.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue says 12 vehicles were involved in the crash. We know one person has died. One of the interstate light poles were struck, causing it to land on top of the truck. Some of the other vehicles struck the pole or ran over it.
