ORIGINAL: Jefferson County deputies are searching for two burglary suspects after another suspect was fatally shot in the 1900 block of Springlake Court off Mary Vann Lane.

The burglary suspect who was fatally shot has been identified as Raheem Jonas Tyreze Stubbs, 22 of Center Point.

Stubbs was killed by a homeowner after allegedly breaking into the house while an 8-year-old child was home alone.

“It’s sad anytime someone loses their life and I’m sure this young man has a family that loves him. It will be a difficult time for them. There are behaviors and activities in this life that increase your chances of losing yours. Kicking in a door and entering someone’s home with criminal intent is one of them. Thank God this little boy and his dad are ok,” Chief Deputy Randy Christian said.

According to the sheriff’s office, the burglary suspect was shot by the homeowner after his son heard the suspects knocking on doors and called his parents and 911.

Deputies responded to a report of a burglary in progress and arrived to find an adult male on the floor, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The boy’s mother recalled his actions, which she described as heroic.

“[He] ran up stairs got a knife and got under the bed and was calling his daddy,” she said. She told us that the father called her and “he was like ‘come home quick,’ I was like what, he said, ‘somebody was trying to break in while DJ (their son) was in here, I just walked in the house and start shooting, and I think I killed one of them.'”

She says her son is scared and wants to move.

The sheriff’s office said the father was minutes away when the son called, and when he arrived he found three men who had broken into the home. The father reportedly confronted them and fired shots from a handgun.

Deputies are using search dogs to find the two suspects who fled on foot.
