BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — NASCAR drivers may be gearing up for Talladega weekend, but driver Joey Gase is making a pit stop at UAB first. Gase is raising awareness for Donate Life. He uses his platform to encourage people to become organ donors.
At the UAB Women and Children’s Center, you could stop by and put your name on a hand. The hands will be placed on Gase’s racecar in Talladega. Gase says the cause is close to his heart- because of his experience with his mother.
Gase explained, “Ever since then I wanted to do whatever I could to raise awareness for it. I learned there is over 110,000 people on a waitlist for it nationwide and they are passing away every day and not only that. I don’t want people to only go and sing up for donation I also want them to have that conversation with their loved ones.”
Gase also recognizes a donor and their family at each race.
