Mother who inpsired 'The Blind Side' visits Birmingham to encourage child advocates

BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WIAT) -- The mother who inspired the film 'The Blind Side' visited Birmingham Thursday afternoon.

Leigh Anne Tuohy, former NFL player Michael Oher's adoptive mother, spoke at the Florentine to support Alabama Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).

"What they do is very near and dear to my heart, because it is the same journey that we went through with Michael. And you know, if you can look at a kid like Michael now, you would never realize that 'Oh my gosh, he almost didn't make it', and just through offering him hope and love and opportunity, it changed his life," said Tuohy.

Tuohy says adopting Oher changed their family's life for the better.

Throughout the month of November, Tuohy is encouraging one adoption a day. She says you can find children who are currently available for adoption by visiting her social accounts.

Volunteers with Alabama CASA say supporting the organization is important, because it gives children who have entered the welfare system due to an unsafe home life a support system. CASA volunteers are there to advocate for the best interest of the child.
