JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — Deputies were on the scene of a homicide in McCalla Wednesday morning after responding to reports of a burglary in progress.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO), authorities responded to the 6600 block of Newbridge Cove at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered an 18-year-old who was dead at the scene.  An initial investigation suggests that the teen was hiding inside the home and was discovered by the homeowner. 

The teen began to leave the residence but was confronted by another resident who was sleeping in a room near the exit. 

Witnesses said that shots were exchanged between the teen and the second resident.  Both subjects were struck by gunfire. 

The male resident was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives are currently interviewing the witnesses in this case.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the teen as 18-year-old Charlei Angelo Jordan.
