BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — In an effort to help save someone in a life-or-death situation, Mayor Randall Woodfin is offering free community classes to teach people how to respond in an emergency situation.
The workshop offers hands-on CPR training, how to apply a tourniquet, how to pack a bleeding wound and apply pressure to an injury until help arrives.
These skills are useable during a fire, natural disaster or if someone suddenly falls ill.
This year, Mayor Woodfin called the violence in Birmingham a public health crisis. The training the city is offering is also an effort to combat the violent shootings.
This effort began in April. Woodfin hopes people who learn these skills will be comfortable in putting them into action if they are ever in an emergency situation.
