SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — 19-year-old William Allen Neff, of Maylene, has died after being assaulted in the head with an aluminum bat, Shelby County deputies said Friday.

The baseball bat assault occurred Wednesday around 1 a.m. at an area called “The Slab.” Deputies said a 16 year old is accused of hitting Neff in the head during a fight.

Neff died Friday at the hospital where he was being treated.

The Shelby County DA’s Office has upgraded the charge against 16-year-old Eric M. Blackerby from assault in the first degree to murder, according to deputies.

Blackerby was arrested July 30, and will be charged as an adult according to a post from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

The Sheriff’s Office said in their post that “The Slab” is a popular swimming area of the Cahaba River off Shelby County Road 10.

Blackerby is being held on $1,000,000 bond.
