Marino’s Market fights to eliminate food deserts in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Food deserts are a major problem in Birmingham. Mayor Woodfin estimates that 69 percent of Birmingham’s population lives in a food desert. This means that in a certain area, people do not have close access to healthy food options.  Because of this, a local grocery store owner is fighting to fix that problem.

Anthony Marino of Marino’s Market in west Birmingham hopes to solve that problem. Marino recently renovated the store as part of his commitment to providing for people in this community.

Marino, the owner of Marino’s Market, said, “We’ll help them design, we’ll take blueprints. We go over the blueprints, give them our suggestions.”

Marino says the area became a food desert over time because of the loss of industry
