BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Sometimes it’s a struggle to get your child excited to go to the dentist but one office is offering something that could change your mind. Medplex Pediatric Dentistry is now using Sister and Sugar, a mother-daughter pair as comfort dogs.
Medplex has been using Sister and Sugar for the past four to five years. They’re available to provide sweet reassurance to patients. They greet patients as they walk to the operatory and are available to sit with children in the chair while undergoing dental procedures like a regular cleaning.
Dogs like Sister and Sugar are trained to provide attention, comfort, love and ease anxiety. Love and support from dogs are shown to reduce heart rates and ease anxiety. Researchers from State University of New York in Buffalo found when conducting a stressful task, people experienced less stress when their pets were with them than when a spouse, family member or close friend was nearby.
Medplex Pediatric Dentistry serves children in the Greater Birmingham area including Hoover, Pelham, Alabaster, Calera and Helena. More information about Sister and Sugar can be found here. You can also find more about Medplex services here.
