BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — In this week’s Living Well with Michelle, Michelle breaks down the pros and cons of buying of local, grass-fed beef compared to conventional, grain-fed beef.
Registered Dietitian Abby Nevins said there are several health benefits of consuming grass-fed beef.
“So one of the biggest benefits of grass fed that I love is omega-3s in there, which are good fatty acids,” said Nevins. “With conventional fed beef, you end up getting basically a higher amount of omega-6s, which is not so good for our hearts.”
Grass-fed beef will cost you more, however.
“If health is something that you’re really focused on, which you should be,” said Nevins. “It’s worth it.”
More and more restaurants are making grass-fed products accessible for all. Cameron Thompson is a culinary director at Farm Burger in Birmingham. The restaurant uses all grass-fed beef sourced from local farms.
“It’s just better for the cow, it’s better for people,” said Thompson. “It’s better for the local economy.”
