Living Well with Michelle: Local Summer Produce

Local News

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — With summer comes a whole new lineup of in-season produce. In this week’s Living Well with Michelle, Michelle met registered dietitian Mim Gaines at the market to talk about the benefits of seasonal eating.

“Think about watermelon, how juicy it is, think about peaches, how wonderfully juicy,” said Gaines. “That’s allowing you to get more fluid in your diet when it’s hot and you need it. So our produce helps us, seasonally, with what we need.”

Gaines said choosing in-season fruits and vegetables can be a fun way to add nutrient-packed snacks to your diet.

“You hear this message — eat your fruits and vegetables all the time, but yet in the states, we still only see about 9 percent of us eating enough,” said Gaines. “That means almost 90 percent, we’re not eating enough vegetables.”

Farmers markets give shoppers an opportunity to buy fresh and local foods. Farm House Produce has been serving Central Alabamians produce since 1957. Co-owner Shawn Duane House said the week of Forth of July is the busiest time of year.

“Watermelon, peaches, plums, nectarines. Cause it’s all right here local from Clanton, to Hayden to Blount County. It’s all right here local.”

Summer produce includes:

  • Corn
  • Zucchini squash
  • Okra
  • Watermelon
  • Tomatoes
  • Watermelon
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Green Beans
  • Eggplant
  • Cucumbers
  • and more!
