Living Well with Michelle: Getting a good night’s sleep

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Most adults should be clocking between seven and nine hours of sleep every night to function at their best. Unfortuantely, busy or inconsistent schedules can make it difficult to get the recommended amount. 

In this week’s Living Well with Michelle, Michelle met with Princeton Baptist Medical Center sleep lab and sleep medicine medical director Dr. Bishop Kelley to talk about ways to get a better night’s sleep. 

It starts with getting into a routine, consistent sleep schedule. 

“Specially important is waking up about the same time each morning,” said Dr. Kelley.

He recommends the following to ensure a proper night’s rest:

  • Sleep in a cool, dark room
  • Avoid eating three hours before bed
  • Avoid drinking alcohol three hours before bed
  • Avoid looking at phone, computer and television screens one hour before bed

Dr. Kelley said it’s important to limit distractions while you are trying to sleep. 

“And those are in the form of a husband or bedmate who snores loudly,” said Kelley. “Or an animal that sleeps and disturbs your sleep.”

If you or a loved one snores loudly during the night, appears to stop breathing during sleep or is excessively tired during the day, then it might be time to head to the doctor for a sleep study.

“Those things point to the person having sleep apnea,” said Kelley. “Which is a condition where the person actually stops breathing during your sleep.”
