Living Well with Michelle: Dancing in the dark

Local News

Mountain Brook, Ala. (WIAT) — One workout program in Mountain Brook is making the phrase “dance like nobody’s watching” a weekly opportunity for women.

SOL Dance Experience is similar to group dance classes, but with an added twist — the lights are turned off.

A mix of many different music genres guides the all-women dance session into a space of creative freedom. Laura Interval started the program.

“To actually listen to the instincts in your body,” said Interval. “To connect with that raw, instinctual power that we all have, is just such an important breakthrough.”

Professional dancer Christina Wade has been coming to the class for nearly four years.

Wade said it’s the sense of female empowerment that keeps her coming back.

“I think that as women,” said Wade. “It’s so important that we fortify each other to say ‘you got this.’”

Shannon Skipper leads the dance sessions each week. She said she loves helping women find a sense of freedom in the dark, so they can be stronger in the light.

“They come and tell me, ‘wow! That was the most freeing thing I have ever done in my life,” said Skipper.

Classes are every Monday night at Villager Yoga in Mountain Brook. You can sign up here: https://soldancex.com/
