CARBON HILL, Ala. (WIAT) – A large fire Friday morning destroyed an old manufacturing plant in Carbon Hill that once provided jobs for many people in the small town.
Carbon Hill police say the fire started around 7:20 a.m. at the former Carbon Hill Manufacturing plant near 1st Ave. North. It created major challenges for the small town’s volunteer department.
“We’ve got several people on the Carbon Hill Department that are at their regular jobs, that are out of town that couldn’t be here to help,” Carbon Hill Fire Department assistant chief Andrew Sims said. “So we had to call the other departments that are in the same shape.”
Several departments contributed, but it took more than six hours to get the fire under control. Police say the building is a total loss.
Sims said the building was once home to a furniture factory and garment factory, but recently it housed only personal property like automobiles and old furniture.
No one was injured in the fire, which was under control by 2 p.m.
