JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office announced further developments in an inmate’s death from June 28 in the Jefferson County Jail.

Earnest True Smith, 36, suffered a seizure last Friday in his cell block and died later at a local hospital.

According to the JCSO, an autopsy was performed and showed there was no foul play involved.

The cause of death is believed to be a plastic bag found in Smith’s stomach that ruptured and released an unknown substance into his body.

According to JCSO, they believe the contents of the bag were illicit drugs that Smith’s body absorbed, leading to the seizure.

No other information has been released at this time.
