GADSDEN, Ala. (WIAT) — A group of local kids loaded up in two vans in Bessemer and took a trip up to Etowah County to join Jameis Winston for what turned out to be an unforgettable fishing trip. Jameis says he wanted them to get back to nature and discover their greatness in a relaxing atmosphere.

The kids got to enjoy themselves on the 63-acre property of the Keenum Lakes and Hunting Lodge. Owner Kenny Keenum says they came as guests and left as friends. He opened the lodge a little more than five years ago and enjoys hosting kids for the experience that they may not get in daily lives.

Some learned how to fish for the first time, and they enjoyed other activities such as corn hole, riding a four-wheeler, or petting horses while feasting on burgers and hot dogs, even a taste of the deer jerky.

It was the culmination of the Jameis Winston Foundation Dream Forever Week. The week began with Shop with a Jock at Dicks Sporting Goods on Monday, On Wednesday Jameis spoke to the young and old at the Bessemer Library and made a $5000.00 donation. He and his personal trainer, Otis Leverette, worked out with football players at Hueytown High School, on Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday, 200 of the top high school recruits across Alabama took part in an exposure camp at Miles College. Many of Jameis’ NFL buddies helped with the camp including former Alabama players Marlon Humphrey and O.J. Howard. On Friday, younger kids got to learn football fundamentals at a football camp at Hueytown High School.
