Irondale Sam’s Club officially closes its doors

Local News

IRONDALE, Ala. (WIAT) — The shopping options are decreasing for people living in Irondale. Sam’s Club is expected to close Friday.

The news of the store’s closure was shared in a letter sent to Mayor Charles Moore two weeks ago.

At the time, the city called the move disturbing news for the city as well as for the employees affected.

In a statement sent to CBS42, Sam’s Club representatives say the decision to close stores was based on a number of factors including financial performance.

The property and building is owned by Walmart.

Mayor Charles Moore had a conversation with Walmart executives this week to talk about the future of the property.

In the meantime, the city is encouraging businesses and investors who may be interested to come forward.

“Not only is this Sam’s closed, but right across the street from here about 8 or 10 years ago there was a Walmart there and it closed and moved into Birmingham, of course Fairfield closed most recent on that’s had a huge impact on the city,” said Moore.

Moore says Sam’s Club sales taxes account for less than 10% of the city’s budget.

“You have a 130 something people who don’t have a job who are looking for work now you have the loss of convenience from having the shopping opportunity be there and the financial impact on the city of Irondale is about 1.4 million a year,” said Moore.

People in Irondale are now left to find another place to show.

Doyce Reeves is a transplant patient and depends on Sam’s Club for his medications.

“It’s important that he gets his medicine in a timely manner and I just don’t know where to go from here, we could go to Sam’s in Trussville but that’s pretty far away from where we live,” said Gaye Reeves, Doyce’s wife.

Moore says a vacant building is no good for anyone, that’s why the city is working to push forward.

Right now, it appears Walmart plans on Marketing the property to sell.

Some other closed Sam’s Club locations are turning into online distribution centers.
