HOOVER, Ala. (WIAT) -- - Mayor Frank Brocato is joining the fight against Ocular Melanoma by taking the Eye Patch Challenge, and encouraging his citizens to do the same. He's hoping to draw awareness and raise money to research a rare form of eye cancer linked to at least 35 graduates of Auburn University.
"We want to do everything that we can to get the word out to not only our citizens, but all throughtout the metro area," Brocato said.
The Eye Patch Challenge was started by Allyson Allred, one of the people who has been diagnosed with Ocular Melanoma. She's attempting to raise awareness and $135,000 work of funding needed to begin researching the disease and it's link to Auburn graduates.
"We are trying to raise money for funding to get the research started at Auburn to find what causs this rare cancer," Allred said.
Sherri Jackson has done in-depth reporting on this cancer that has no garnered national attention. Now, Mayor Brocato wants to join in on the fight for researching a cure.
"You can't help but want to do everything you can to get the word out for her, and for the others diagnosed with this rare disease," he added.
