Homewood city council looking to make trail by Brookwood mall safer for pedestrians

HOMEWOOD, Ala (WIAT) —  Homewood city council is looking for ways to keep runners safe, especially in light of the news of a jogger being hit and killed on Shades Creek Parkway near Brookwood Mall.

It’s still unsure exactly where this jogger was crossing exactly, but we know it was across from Brookwood Mall.

According to Homewood city councilwoman Jennifer Andress, in Monday’s city council meeting, they opened bids for a crosswalk with a timer at the light near the Marriott.

That will connect to a new sidewalk and then take that sidewalk to Rumson Road where the Shades Valley YMCA is.

The city is also about to start construction on phase 2 of the Shades Creek Greenway, also known as Lakeshore trail, that will add another 1.75 miles (2.82 km).

Andress said she’s meeting with ALDOT next week to discuss the Hollywood Blvd pedestrian bridge but will also ask about adding a timer for the crosswalk at Windsor Dr and Shades Creek Parkway.
