Birmingham, Ala. (WIAT) — Thursday is all about empowering, building and celebrating women. The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District (HABD) will kick-off a special celebration of the U.S. Housing and Urban Development’s Strong Families initiative with another “HERstory, HERvoice“ event.
The purpose of the HUD’s Strong Families initiative is to uplift fathers, mothers and children who live in public housing by focusing on education, health, and economic empowerment.
The HUD’s Strong Families’ mission is to strengthen, empower, and improve the quality of life of families living in HUD-assisted housing communities by providing access to a variety of services through a strategic collaborative approach in the areas of health, education and economic empowerment.
The event is set to take place 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 23 at the Cooper Green Homes Community Center at 1519 Arthur Shores Drive Southwest in Birmingham.
Events through the organization are held during the months of May and June and are designed to empower families with resources to ensure positive opportunities.

HERstory, HERvoice 2019 has a goal to inspire women and mothers through the stories shared (from guest speakers) about enduring life experiences and how the lessons learned from those experiences transformed their lives. Thursday’s program will highlight empowerment and “red table“ talks with our special guests Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Tyson; V94.9’s Valencia “Mrs. V“ Johnson who is also a comedian, minister and motivational speaker; and Minister Celeste McCloud of The King’s Daughters ministries.
