BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT)– Unemployment rates are at record lows and hiring is up.
According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), an improved economy, company growth, and anticipated retirements are the main factors contributing to an increase in hiring.
NACE’s projections show employers are hiring 10.7% more college graduates this year.
NACE also reports 2019 graduates are likely to see higher salaries.
UAB Career Services Center tells us how the healthy economy is reflecting in Birmingham.
Brandon Wright is the Director of the UAB Career Center. He says there is a great wealth of opportunity here and in the region.
Wright says opportunities exist in computer information, IT, machine learning, business data, healthcare, and many other fields.
The Alabama Department of Labor is reporting record low unemployment rates at 3.7%.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports unemployment rate is the lowest its been in 50 years.
Wright says contract work like driving for Lyft and delivering for Shipt are providing great opportunities to the work force and allowing people to set their own schedules.
He also says entrepreneurship is growing.
“When you look at opportunity, the barrier for entry for entrepreneurs has been lowered tremendously, so you can really do alot and have multiple opportunities.”
Wright tells us UAB is in meetings with Innovation Depot to create a career fair that will connect UAB students to Alabama’s startups.
Throughout the year, different employers also host open interviews on campus.
“We didn’t have a company come on campus and interview that didn’t hire a student,” says Wright.
The UAB Career Services Center is open to all students and alumni. For anyone who is looking for employment, Wright says they’ll help connect job seekers to the vast number of employers available.
