Girl Scouts give back large donation, raise even more

Local News

(WIAT) –A major donation to the Girl Scouts of America could be on the line.

In Washington State a recent donor asked one chapter to return a $100,000 donation after the chapter refused to make a guarantee that the money would not be used to support transgender scouts.

That money had been intended to send 500 disadvantaged girls to summer camp.

“It was a sad decision, but it wasn’t a difficult decision. We will not be put into a position to turn a girl away,” said Megan Ferland of Girl Scouts of Western Washington.

The Girl Scouts of America accepts transgender members on a case-by-case basis.

A crowd funding campaign launched earlier this week to replace the lost money has raised more than enough funding. Nearly a quarter of a million dollars has been donated since Monday.
