BROOKWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) — Friday marks a somber anniversary for many families in Tuscaloosa County. 15 years ago 13 coal miners were killed after an explosion happened in Brookwood.

Wanda Blevins lost her husband David that tragic day on September 23, 2001. Blevins was 52 years old. He was one of 32 miners working underground that day in the Jim Walter Mine No. 5.

“15 years later I still mourn my husband, I am very sad because I miss him,” Blevins said.

Wanda Blevins says it is important to her that her family and the community never forget her husband the others who died that day.

“David was such a wonderful person. He was caring and giving and he was a great father. He was a wonderful husband, a great provider and just a great community person. And I just don’t want him to be forgotten by the family or the community,” she said.

On Friday, the annual memorial service is scheduled to take place at West Brookwood Church, where a memorial stands with the names of all 13 miners.
