Four Birmingham restaurants recognized in Alabama Barbecue Battle

LEEDS, Ala. (WIAT) — Five Alabama restaurants have now received awards from the Alabama Tourism Department for winning their categories in the Alabama Barbecue Battle.

Four of the five all operate in the Birmingham metro area.  The fifth is in Selma.

WIAT 42 News spoke with one of the winners, Rusty’s Bar-B-Q, after the presentation. Rusty’s took home an award for best Mom N’ Pop joint, priding themselves on being a family-run single location barbecue destination.

“I think the main thing is that we’re doing things over hickory on an actual pit and not in a smoker,” said Rusty Tucker. “It makes a big difference. It’s a very traditional way of cooking, and then also the sauces. We offer four sauces.

Tucker says he’s seen a lot of new customers at his place in Leeds since the announcement a couple of weeks ago, and he’s hoping that continues.
