Former NFL Player Gary Burley in need of kidney transplant

Former NFL player and Birmingham native Gary Burley is asking for the public’s help receiving a kidney transplant and hoping his story will draw more attention to the need for donors for thousands of other people.

“We have some people that are interested in donating. So we’ll see,” Burley said, remaining optimistic that he’ll receive the kidney he needs.

Currently, his only kidney is functioning at less than 20%. He undergoes dialysis 3 times a week. It’s the latest in a string of health battles he’s faced over the last 5 years, including multiple myeloma. his wife, Bobbie Knight, is his biggest supporter.

“I see a strength in him that I don’t think I would have. We’ve got some people that have offered but you never know how it’s going to turn out,” Knight said.

“God has always been there for me,” Burley added. “I’m praying this happens. I’m going to be smiling all the time anyway, so why stop now?”

To help Burley by finding out if you are a candidate for kidney donation, he asks that you call UAB Hospital at 1-888-822-7892. Specify that you want to help Gary Burley and give his birthday: December 8, 1952.
