A fire at a hotel in Calera has left more than a dozen people displaced.
12 different fire departments responded to the massive fire at the Motel 6 off of Highway 25 around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday night. There were between 30-40 people staying in the motel at the time of the fire, according to Calera Fire Chief Sean Kendrick.
The Red Cross is assisting guests with finding another motel or another living arrangement.
Jesse Newell was staying in the Motel 6 at the time of the fire. He commends the motel manager for making sure everyone was able to get out safely.
“I’d say the guy who owns the motel, he’s also the manager, he did an extremely good job,” Newell said. “He was running all around the motel trying to get people out.”
Everyone made it out of the motel safely. One person reportedly had to be rescued and is suffering minor injuries.
Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
