CULLMAN, Ala (WIAT)– The Heartland Quilters Guild in Cullman spent the last four months hand crafting quilts for soldiers overseas.
Ricky Weissend’s wife made him one before he deployed.
“It took me all summer to do it,” says Shannon Weissend.
When the soldier made it overseas, other soldiers in his unit took notice.
Betty Weissend says her son called her and asked if she could make one for every soldier in his unit.
“By God’s grace many people have stepped up,” said Betty.
The Heartland Quilters Guild began cutting fabric in January. All 36 quilts were finished April 10.
Alabama Congressmen Robert Aderholt and Redstone Arsenal are assisting in shipping the quilts out the week of April 15.
