Crimson Tide Super Fan Walt Gary Remembered

Local News

(TUSCALOOSA, Ala. WIAT) — Wednesday, more than a hundred people gathered at the University of Alabama to celebrate the life of the Crimson Tide’s biggest fan, Walt Gary.

Walt died last Thursday at the age of 36 due to health complications.

CBS 42 Reporter Malique Rankin attended his celebration. His family says they have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support since Walt passed.

“We have heard from players that were here years ago that Walt remained friends with. We’ve heard from people, I don’t even know who they are. We appreciate everything, and all of our family is just humbled by all of it,” mother Betsy Gary said.

The joy Walt Gary brought the people around him touched the University of Alabama and the Tuscaloosa community. He found friendship in the head football coach, Nick Saban. Walt and Saban had a tradition at the end of Thursday football practices. Walt would meet Saban at the bottom of the steps, greet Saban, and give his final score prediction.

Saban spoke at the celebration, thanking Walt for the smile he gave.

“Just the passion and being positive. I think the inspiration he had on all of us are because of those two things,” Saban said. “It makes me glad to be here and always made me glad to see Walt every Thursday. I always walked out that door much more spiritually uplifted than when I came down those steps.”

Saban says he knows Walt will be looking down on him from Heaven each time he walks down the steps on a Thursday practice.

Walt’s family has set up a scholarship fund through the University of Alabama. They hope is to allow another child, who may not otherwise have the chance, to attend the university. To donate, checks can be mailed to:
