MCDONALD CHAPEL, Ala. (WIAT) — An investigation is underway after a three-year-old was shot Friday night in Jefferson County.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) deputies responded around 8:30 p.m. to the call of a child shot on Roanoke Street in the Forestdale community.
Upon arrival, they found a three-year-old being treated by family members for a gunshot wound to the leg.
A statement from JCSO says that the child found a loaded firearm belonging to a family member and accidentally shot themselves.
Chief Deputy David Agee with JCSO said Friday night that the child’s injuries appeared to be non-life threatening. The child was transported to Children’s of Alabama, a pediatric hospital in Birmingham.
